My First Startup
Inspired to fund some of the volunteer initiatives I did in high school, I started a tutoring business, which grew quickly during the pandemic. Early traction gave me huge amounts of naive optimism in my ability to scale this into a massive tech company. I found my co-founder after pitching on r/cofounders on Reddit. We still work together on a lot of things 👊
I had no idea what I was doing, and I made every mistake of an early-stage founder.
❌ I spent a lot of money on marketing that got me zero customers.
❌ I spent a lot of time building product that was never used.
❌ I embarrassed myself more than a few dozen times.
That said, the business still serves a small community of families in Orange County. I did over $150K in sales over the course of two years, had 150 active instructors at its peak, and partnered with large private schools from 2021-2023.
